If you read my Netgalley picks for September then you may remember me listing this novel as one of my top picks. I was very intrigued by the magical aspects of the novel. It is a magical murder mystery what else could I really ask for in a novel?

Honestly, I feel as though I read this book at the perfect time. I am still in a bit of a slump. I want to read but just can’t bring myself to commit to a book when I have free time. However, I was able to complete this novel.

As I was reading this book I couldn’t help but think that it really would fall between two genres in my opinion. It is truly between a middle grade novel and a young adult novel. That was probably the best recipe for me at the time. This made for a quick yet entertaining novel.

The world that this novel is set in is very interesting yet not overly complicated. It was very easy to get into the world and understand the politics of it. I will say though that I am very interested in getting a more complete and deeper understanding of the world in the next novel.

The characters in this novel were okay. I was not really in love with any of the characters in particular. Yet, I was interested enough to really breeze through the book. That being said I was very intrigued by Prince Rennard and would be severely disappointed if we don’t get more interactions with him in the next novel.

Overall, this book was good. I would recommend it to anyone as a quick read. If you’re in a reading slum this may just do the trick for you like it has for me.

What book can you count on to bring you out of a slump?

  1. I really want to read this book. I’ve read a concerning review that called it out for relying on the bury your gays trope. Obviously, that’s problematic – but so many people love it that I feel I need to read it to make up my own mind.
