Listen to Your Heart by Kasie West – A Spolier Free Book Review

“I wondered if life was about facing fears. Sometimes we overcame them and sometimes they overcame us. On the days we won, we had every right to celebrate.”

Talking to other people isn’t Kate Bailey’s favorite activity. She’d much rather be out on the lake, soaking up the solitude and sunshine. So when her best friend, Alana, convinces Kate to join their high school’s podcast, Kate is not expecting to be chosen as the host. Now she’ll have to answer calls and give advice on the air? Impossible.

But to Kate’s surprise, she turns out to be pretty good at the hosting gig. Then the podcast gets in a call from an anonymous guy, asking for advice about his unnamed crush. Kate is pretty sure that the caller is gorgeous Diego Martinez, and even surer that the girl in question is Alana. Kate is excited for her friend … until Kate herself starts to develop feelings for Diego. Suddenly, Kate finds that while doling out wisdom to others may be easy, asking for help is tougher than it looks, and following your own advice is even harder.

Kasie West’s adorable story of secrets, love, and friendship is sure to win over hearts everywhere.

It is officially summer. That means I have a bit more time for reading right now. It also means that I also have the urge to read any and every contemporary that crosses my path. This book was introduced to me while I was browsing Amazon for a new read. The combination of Kasie West plus this wonderfully summery cover made this book irresistible to me.

I’ve read quite a few of West’s novels. This book was good. However, it isn’t my favorite of her novels. That being said it was a fun and cute read.

One of the things that I really enjoy about West’s novels are how character centered they are. The characters in her novels really drive the plot forward. They develop and learn from all of the plot points in the story. That being said, I did not find myself to be quite as emotionally attached to the characters in this novel.

I was invested in the relationships that developed over the course of the novel. Yet, the characters weren’t enough to truly drive this novel for me. The plot points were just okay and the characters weren’t relateable enough to make up for that.

In all, it was a good book. I can’t say that it is my favorite contemporary novel. Yet, I did enjoy reading it. This novel is perfect for a quick summer time read and perfect for a read-a-thon.

What do you look for in a contemporary read?

  1. I was planning on reading this. Right now, I’m reading Life, Love, and the List which is also by Kasie West. I agree with you on how her books are character-driven. My enjoyment of her books greatly depends on whether I like the characters or not. ^^
